Bring a slice of nostalgia to your table with Mom’s Flat Apple Pie. This recipe turns the traditional apple pie into a delightful sheet version with a crispy crust, layered with apples and a sweet glaze that everyone will love.
Ingredients:
For the Pie:
3 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 tsp salt
1 1/2 cups shortening
1 egg yolk, plus enough milk to make 1 cup of liquid
2-3 handfuls of Corn Flakes
10 Granny Smith apples, sliced and cored
4-8 Tbsp butter, cubed
1 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1 egg white, for brushing
1 tsp sugar, for brushing
For the Thin Frosting:
2/3 cup powdered sugar
2-3 dashes vanilla extract
Milk, enough for a thin frosting
Directions:
Prepare Crust: In a large bowl, mix flour, salt, and shortening until crumbly. Mix in the egg yolk and milk mixture to form a dough.
Assemble Base: Roll out half of the dough to fit a 15×10-inch cookie sheet. Lay the dough in the sheet and sprinkle with Corn Flakes.
Add Apples: Arrange sliced apples over the Corn Flakes. Combine sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the apples. Dot with butter cubes.
Cover with Top Crust: Roll out the remaining dough and place over the apples. Seal edges and cut slits in the top crust.
Brush and Bake: Beat the egg white with 1 tsp sugar and brush over the top crust. Bake at 425°F for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
Prepare Frosting: Mix powdered sugar, vanilla, and enough milk to create a thin frosting. Drizzle over the hot pie immediately after baking.
